Can I put it in the washing machine?

I shake mine out and rinse it in the shower. The backing is not something I would put through a full wash cycle, so I keep it simple.

Which size fits a standard covered box?

The Large is the safer choice for a covered box, because you want the mat to extend past the entrance. The Small is fine for an open tray.

Is the top actually soft?

It is a soft, slightly cushioned surface rather than hard plastic. My older cat steps on it without hesitation, which was not true of our last mat.

I was sceptical, but there is a visible difference in how much litter ends up on the bathroom floor. The honeycomb catches the bits and they shake straight out over the bin. Mine is the Large.

As the family member who notices crumbs, I can confirm this mat catches more than I expected. The soft top is nicer underfoot than the hard plastic one it replaced. It is still a litter mat; it will not perform miracles, but it does the job quietly.
