What size should I order for a 55 lb dog?

Go with the Large. Mine is 60 lb and the Medium was snug once he curled up. The listed dimensions are accurate, so measure your dog stretched out rather than curled.

Can the whole bed go in the washing machine?

Just the cover. It unzips and goes on a cold wash; the foam insert should be spot cleaned and air dried, because a machine will chew it up. Ours has survived about a dozen washes.

Is the base actually non-slip on hardwood?

On our oak floor it stays put for the most part. If a dog launches onto it at speed it can shift an inch or two, so I put a grippy rug pad under it and have not thought about it since.

Two muddy Labrador incidents in the first week and the cover unzipped and went straight in the machine. Came out the same shape. The liner underneath did its job, which I did not expect.

Bought it for the dog. The cat has now claimed it and the dog is being very polite about the whole situation. The raised edges are apparently ideal for a cat who wants to keep one eye on the room, so consider this a multi-species investment. Five stars for diplomacy.

Our rescue beagle is thirteen and was starting to struggle on the cold tile. The Medium arrived yesterday and he was asleep on it within the hour. The bolsters are firm enough that he can rest his chin on them without them flattening straight away.
