Which small pets is this suitable for?

It is sized for rabbits, guinea pigs, and chinchillas. I would not use it for anything much smaller, and the opening is generous enough for a large rabbit to pull from.

Can it sit on a shelf instead of being wall mounted?

Yes, mine sits flat on a shelf beside the pen and works fine. If your pet leans on it, wall mounting is the sturdier option.

Is the tray removable?

It lifts out, which is how I empty it. I tip the loose strands back into the rack rather than binning them.

My two guinea pigs pull hay from the wide opening without dragging it everywhere. The tray catches the fall-through and I tip it back into the rack, which saves a lot of waste.

I bought this for my granddaughter's rabbit and ended up buying a second for mine. It is not exciting, it is just better than hay on the floor, which is all I wanted. The rabbit seems pleased with the arrangement.

I also use it free-standing on a shelf next to the pen. It holds plenty and the powder coating wipes down easily.
