The guard limits how much you can take at once, which helps. Still, go slowly, work in short sessions, and stop if your pet is stressed. It helps to have someone show you the first time.

Does it work on thick nails?

For cats and small dogs, yes. The file is small, so it is better for smoothing than for heavy shaping. For very thick nails I would use the trimmer and skip the file.

How often should I replace it?

Blades dull over time. Ours are still cutting cleanly after a few months of occasional use. If it starts crushing rather than cutting, it is time to replace it.

The guard gives me a bit of confidence that I am not taking too much at once. I do one paw at a time and stop while my cat is still relaxed. The file smooths the edges so he does not snag on the carpet.

We have agreed that I may trim one nail per day in exchange for a treat. The kit makes my half of the bargain easy. The cat would like it noted that the treats are still insufficient. Progress is being made.
