Does it need to go in the fridge or freezer?

No. It recharges on its own between uses. Mine spends most of the day on the floor and stays cool enough.

Will it survive a dog who digs at it?

The surface is puncture-resistant, not puncture-proof. My cat has left faint marks kneading it. I would not leave a digger unsupervised on it.

How cold does it actually get?

My Lab usually flops on the kitchen tile all summer. He has started choosing this mat instead, which I did not expect. It does not feel cold at first, more like cool, and it stays that way. We have the Large.

It is not air conditioning and it will not turn a hot car into a cool one. It is a cooler patch of floor for a dog who wants one, and mine does. Set expectations at reasonable and you will be pleased.
