I’ve owned the StepGuard in three different colors now, and this latest pair is the best yet. The first pair I bought two years ago because my skin hates everything—I get rashes from polyester socks. The StepGuard‘s lining is this weirdly soft mesh that doesn’t make me itch even after eight hours of standing at the art fair booth. My only worry with this new pair: will it survive my toddler’s morning ritual? She used my old ones as a slide down the stairs, and they still held up. But she’s bigger now and throws fits. I tested them last week. She grabbed one, screamed, threw it into the dog bowl, then stomped on the toe. I wiped it off, no stains, no smell, still comfortable. The rubber toe cap has that slight texture that grips the floor even wet. I don’t know why they make them in pastel colors though—that‘s just asking for trouble.

Disclaimer: I‘ve been in a wheelchair for five years, so I‘m not walking in these, but I need shoes that don‘t slip off footrests and look decent for meetings. I took the StepGuards out of the box an hour ago. Right away, the smell hit me—strong rubber, like a new yoga mat mixed with that old carpet scent from my grandma‘s house. Not bad exactly. The toe box is wide enough that my feet don‘t feel crushed, and the heel cup is stiff but not scratchy. I already love them. No idea about durability, don‘t care yet.

Honestly, nothing is wrong with them. They feel fine, they fit fine. But my flat is 200 square feet, and these shoes in person are massive. The photos made them look sleek, but on my size 8 feet they’re like bricks. I kept staring at them on my shoe rack and they made the whole hallway feel crowded. Stupid reason maybe, but it killed my enjoyment.
