I've had three pairs of these across as many years. They age like a good thrift-store find, taking on a soft patina of chalk and sweat. The first wash they shrink slightly—the foam compresses into something almost intimate, like a worn corset lining. By the tenth wash, the fabric loses its stiffness, and the Velcro starts to fuzz. By twenty, it's still usable but nostalgic, a relic of hundreds of reps. They don't smell great, a little like old gym socks and vanilla. But they hold a barbell's cold weight with a quiet dignity, as though they know they'll outlast your shoulder tendons. There's poetry in that—or maybe I've just been polishing props too long.

I lost the little—no wait, the big strap, the Velcro piece, somehow I dropped it into the laundry chute and it's gone forever. Completely my fault, I should know better than to open packages over a grate. Now the pad just flops around. I mean, you can still use it but barely. Ugh. I'm so mad at myself.

At first I was so mad. These pads felt like throwing a brick on the bar, totally unbalanced my squat. But then I realized you gotta hold them like you mean it—sorta choke up on the foam. Once I did, the weight in my hand actually feels solid, like you're gripping something real. Not bad for the price.
