I've washed this vest twenty times at least. the elastic is limp now like a tired accordion, but the reflective stripes still catch light like morning frost on a fence. the smell is just damp nylon, nothing sour. the seams hold. it used to be tight on me, now it sags a little, but the glow is still there. each time I put it on I think of the nights it saved me from a clumsy driver. it's a quiet hero.

the little booklet shows a diagram that looks like a Rorschach test. I spent ten minutes trying to figure out which strap goes where. eventually I just crossed them over my chest like a samurai and it worked fine. maybe I'm dumb but if you can't explain a vest, hire a better designer.

MY GRANDSON JOHNNY RUNS AT NIGHT LIKE A SCARED RABBIT DODGING COYOTES. I BOUGHT HIM THIS VEST AND HE SHINES LIKE A WARY OLD ELK STANDING IN THE MEADOW. HE WEARS IT EVERY EVENING AND THE STRIPES GLOW SO BRIGHT YOU CAN SPOT HIM FROM THE PORCH LIKE A FIREFLY IN A JAR. NOW I SLEEP EASY KNOWING HE WON'T BE TRAMPLED BY SOME DISTRACTED DRIVER.
