I'm a touring musician—used to eating gas station crackers and calling it dinner. So when my buddy tossed me a jar of this 'Pantriva Ember Chili Jam' from SnackSmith Co., I figured it'd be some cheap, watery paste with fake heat. Man, was I wrong. The texture is like a riverbed: smooth but with little gritty bits of pepper seed and maybe some charred onion? It's surprisingly complex. I spread it on a soggy sandwich in a highway rest stop and it woke me up. It tastes like someone actually cared. It's the first grocery item in years that made me stop scrolling and just eat.

So I haven't actually opened the jar yet because I'm packing for a camping trip this weekend and I wanted to save it for that. But the label is really pretty, like a kinda smoky red with a tiny pepper drawing. I bought the Extra Spicy because I like to live dangerously by the fire you know? My buddy Dave said he used it on some grilled chicken last summer and it was insane. I'm hoping it's good because I got it for $6.99 on sale and that's cheaper than the stuff at the gas station. I'll report back after I get back from the Sawtooths. Probably.

I ordered this for my wife as a 'thinking of you' gift while I'm on a two week rotation offshore. It arrived four days after the estimated date, which is ridiculous. The jam itself is actually decent—mild, not too sweet—but the whole point was a surprise. I'm not even sure if it's giftable because the jar is small and the label has a weird texture like sticky plastic. I guess if you're buying for yourself it's okay. But for a gift? No. Late delivery ruined it.
