I keep buying these because I keep losing them in the hives—no, really, I set it down on a frame and the bees just sort of claim it. This is my fourth DockGuard, and I can tell you exactly what it smells like fresh out of the box: a faint chemical bake, like a new phone charger left in a hot car, mixed with that new-plastic tang that reminds me of the little tabs on my supers. It's not unpleasant, it's just specific. Some people say it fades after a week, but I swear mine took three hard winters and a lot of nectar spills before it mellowed into a neutral, slightly warm smell. The black one I bought two years ago is now almost scentless, but the frost one from last summer still gives off that faint sharpness if you stick your nose right on the vent. My wife says I'm insane, but she doesn't run three apiaries. The fit on my nightstand is perfect, the grip keeps it from sliding off during extraction days, and it's built like a Langstroth box. Just wish they'd make a yellow one for the dandelion flow.

So I got this because my old charger stand broke right when I was packing for a two-week trip to the coast, and I was already annoyed because my suitcase zipper caught my favorite hoodie and tore it. Then the hotel had one of those nightmare desk setups where the plug is behind a giant wooden hutch, so I had to crawl under the desk like a raccoon. I'm left-handed so everything in my life is backwards anyway. This stand is fine, fits in my carry-on's side pocket, doesn't clatter against my water bottle. The cable management is decent, I guess. It held up.

I've been meaning to write this for ages, but I've been on the road every week—three weeks out of four, my colleagues call me the human carry-on. This charger stand is like a good gas station sandwich: you don't expect much, but it's exactly what you need at 2 AM in a Kansas motel. It's not gourmet, it's the turkey sub that holds together when everything else falls apart. Fits in my roller bag, holds my phone without wobbling, and the cord stays tidy.
