Best microphone for hallway announcements

I work as a school caretaker and bought this to record morning announcements since our old system is trash. Turns out it’s perfect for that, but I’ve found I use it more for something else: narrating security camera footage when I’m reviewing incidents. The USB plug-and-play works with my old laptop, and the sound is clean enough to pick up whispers. The little rubber base keeps it from sliding on my desk. Also, it’s small enough to stash in a drawer when the headmaster walks by. Unexpected win.

Good for recording bird calls, and a rant

So last week I’m out at dawn, trying to record a yellow warbler—bloody thing wouldn’t shut up but my phone mic sucked. My wife said, “Why not use that mic you bought?” I’d forgotten the EchoNook existed. Plugged it into my laptop, set it on the windowsill—and damn, it picked up the call clear as a bell. The stitching on the grille is tight, no rattles, even when I accidentally knocked it over. Anyway, that warbler turned out to be a goldfinch. Twitching is hard. But the mic works well.

I saw a review saying the stitching on the grille was shoddy. Nonsense. I measured the mesh gaps with calipers—uniform 0.5mm, tight as a drum. The seams on the base are flush, no burrs. Tested with a pink noise file: frequency response is flat within 2dB from 100Hz to 8kHz. For the price, that’s engineering. The only niggle is the USB port seating feels a touch loose, but it hasn’t caused issues. Overall, excellent.
